Attending dental checkups and teeth cleanings at least two times each year is essential to ensure you maintain the optimal level of oral health. During your six month checkup, we’ll carefully examine every aspect of your smile screening for the warning signs of the most common oral health concerns including tooth decay, gum disease, teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism), temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ/TMD), and oral cancer. Next, our doctors will carefully clean plaque and tartar buildup from your smile. They’ll also be happy to answer any questions you have about oral hygiene products and your at-home care routine. Finally, we’ll review the results of your examination walking through areas for concern, explaining potential treatment options, and answering any questions you may have. Before you leave, we’ll have a complete plan for your ongoing oral health care.
Gum Disease & Treatment
Gum disease effects more than 50% of US adults, is the leading cause of tooth loss for people over 30, and as much as 80% of people with gum disease remain undiagnosed. If gum disease was any other chronic health condition, it might be called an epidemic. At Lakefront Dental Spa, we’re passionate about helping our patients avoid being just another one of these statistics. That’s why we screen for gum disease during every dental checkup and offer a variety of periodontal therapies to renew oral health.
Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ/TMD) and bruxism may have varying causes, but in some cases, we’re able to use the same treatment to improve both conditions. TMD occurs when the joints connecting the jaw to the skull are strained or damaged. Bruxism is the unconscious grinding and clenching of teeth, and it typically occurs at night time. Bruxism may be a result of stress, misaligned bit, or just a bad habit. At Lakefront Dental Spa, we offer patients custom crafted oral appliances to shift the jaw into its most comfortable position, reducing unconscious movements at night that might cause pain. Night guards also protect bruxism sufferers from damage or wear by placing a physical barrier between teeth.
Oral Cancer Screening
Many patients think that oral cancer only happens to those who smoke or chew tobacco, but more than 25% of patients diagnosed each year don’t engage in any of the high risk behaviors associated with the disease. We perform oral cancer screenings as part of every six month checkup, but we encourage patients to let us know right away if they experience any of the early warning signs including lumps or bumps in the soft tissue, chronic sore throat, soft tissue discoloration, and sores that don’t heal.
Fluoride is the key nutrient necessary to build strong, healthy smiles. As our teeth develop, the fluoride we ingest in water and other supplements creates the dense tooth enamel we need to protect our teeth. Once teeth erupt from the gums, ingested fluoride has minimal effect. That’s why brushing two times each day with a fluoridated toothpaste is so important. For patients who have weak, cavity-prone teeth, we offer professional-grade fluoride treatments. We can quickly apply the solution during any six month checkup to fortify patients’ teeth.
Don’t wait until your next appointment to care for your smile following trauma or if you experience a severe toothache. Instead, call our team right away. We do our utmost to see emergency patients on the day that they contact us. If we’re unable to see you the day you call, we’ll walk you through at-home care and pain management techniques over the phone. Our top priority is ensuring your safety. If you experience potentially life threatening trauma like a broken jaw, or have a severe facial swelling, you should proceed to your local emergency room.

Kids are welcome! Bring your kids to our office for a visit as early as one year of age, and we’ll do an oral health evaluation. During this early visit, we evaluate smiles for any signs of developmental concerns. If your child’s smile is developing properly, we’ll be happy to provide their dental care for life. In rare cases, we may refer your child to a local pediatric dentistry specialist, but this is only necessary if they present warning signs of advanced concerns with their dental development.
As we age, our bodies and smiles change. At Lakefront Dental Spa, we offer a number of services that can restore your smile to a naturally younger, healthier appearance. When teeth first erupt from the gum line, patients’ smiles are usually white, strong, and healthy. Unfortunately, over the years, the pearly white outer layer of tooth enamel is worn down, revealing the yellow-colored dentin layer below the surface. Giving smiles a discolored, yellow appearance. We can help you reclaim your youthful smile with a variety of treatment options like porcelain veneers, cosmetic bonding, and dental crowns. If you’ve suffered tooth loss, we’re happy to work with local oral surgeons to restore your smile with comfortable, natural looking and feeling dental implant supported tooth replacement. We’re here to help you reclaim a bright, white, youthful smile.
